Essay

I am right. No, I am right

I am 100% sure.
But I am 200% sure!!!

Sounds familiar?

Have you ever believed that you were 100%right? You felt as sure about it as the fact that you have skin and bones in your body. Yet, the other person also felt and believed that they were 100% right!

I stand here on the earth and see that moon is going around the earth. Makes sense, right?

But, think for a moment, how would it be for Mr Moon-creature standing up there on the moon? How would he think? Wouldn’t he think that the earth goes around the moon? Wouldn’t he see the earth coming up from the horizon, and going down into the horizon? And wouldn’t he conclude that the earth goes around the moon?

So, what is really the truth? And when earth-creature and moon-creature meet, how should they solve their little dilemma. Both are 100% convinced that their version is the correct one!

Once of my favourite quotes is by Rumi - ‘Out beyond ideas of right and wrong, there is a field. I will meet you there.'

When it comes to matters of philosophy and spirituality and even matters of the heart, I fully agree with him. However, I believe there are some other matters where there are indeed some rights and wrongs. The question is how do we define them, and how do we come to a conclusion.

Should I study engineering or not, what is right and what is wrong?
Does it make sense to take a gap year after 12th, what is right and what is wrong?
When is the right time have a relationship with someone of the opposite gender, what is right and what is wrong?
How much should I study, what is right and what is wrong?
Should I give in to everything my parents say or should I do my own thing, what is right and what is wrong?

How do we define right and wrong in these situations?

If my objective is to become fit, then the right thing is to exercise everyday.
If my objective is to be peaceful, then the right thing is to forgive instantly.
If my objective is to be a leader, then the right thing is to help people discover their strengths.
If my objective is to build strong relationships, then the right thing is keep ego out of the way.
If my objective is to grow my business, then the right thing is have yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals.
If my objective is to create something new, then the right thing is to experiment and explore possibilities.
If my objective is to get into the best college for architecture, then the right thing is to dedicate myself to academics.

Without being clear about objectives, right and wrong only confuses and slows me down.

With clarity about my goal and objectives, right and wrong become decision making tools in my hands and speed me up!

With loads of love and gratitude,
adi.
